The Mercedes-AMG GT is truly a feat of mechanical excellence and engineering. But the engineers in Affalterbach didn’t stop at just excellence; they went above and beyond to deliver the high-performance model of the GT, the Mercedes-AMG GTR. Available in both coupe and roadster variants, the GTR redefines what it means to be a luxury vehicle.
Hey, guys. Welcome back to European Exotic Center. You joined me in our 2020 Mercedes-AMG GTR. This car is finished in Brilliant Blue Magno, and it has a matte wrap over the top, so it has a really menacing look. Let's take it for a quick little drive.
So for those who don't know, this is the more hardened track-focus variant of the traditional AMG GT. You get 577 brake horsepower from a four-liter twin turbo V8, seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission, and incredibly quick shifts. Top speed's 198 miles an hour. Yeah. This thing is on rails. Jesus!
One thing you'll notice is you do sit rather far back in this car. You're sitting just over the rear axle of the car, much like the SLS, which this is sort of the spiritual successor to that car. And so it has a similar shaping to it. The hood isn't quite as long as that car, but you definitely still have that very interesting and very unique view out front. Visibility, though, is actually quite good. Jesus!
One more. Obviously, if I was on a track or something, I could test out the 10 way 10-stage traction control system, which allows you to decide exactly how much traction you would like, which is rather incredible because most systems are just a simple on or off, or even like a three-way system. But to have a 10-stage system, really allows you to fine-tune and focus on your particular driving style. No turbo lag, it's a very linear power band.
Yeah. And it's just effortless, like truly effortless. And because of the way the turbos are situated within the engine, they're mounted within the feet of the engine, so there's virtually no lag. It's just like that. Yeah. It's just rips.
And then on down shifts, it's just popcorn. The car physically is quite small, so it's very easy to place, very easy to maneuver around traffic in the park. The car also has four wheel steering, which is just such an amazing thing. So the wheels, at low speed, turn opposite of each other, and at high speeds turn at the same direction. So what that means, at low speeds, the car is more maneuverable or agile, and at high speeds, it's much more stable.
This one is fitted with yellow seat belts as well as yellow stitching. Alcantara inserts, plenty of leather inside, plenty of carbon fiber inside. Carbon fiber race seats, Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
The thing that amazes me about this car is the fact that if you just slap it back in the comfort mode, put it back in automatic, put the suspension in comfort mode, it's a completely different animal. It's just completely docile. Like you would've no idea it can do what it can do. And that aspect of it really makes it a great daily driver. So steering is incredibly sharp and precise as you would expect.
Two hours later.
Yeah. Dude, oh my God. This is the center console here with your manual mode, your suspension modes, traction control system, your exhaust button right here, which I would have on all the time. Oh, rev to 7,000 RPM.
Even though it is turbocharged, it doesn't sound turbocharged. It has a lot of personality. This car has a ton of personality. It doesn't take life too seriously, just does thunder as a soundtrack. Oh, just rips on downshifts
It sounds like indigestion. Putting comfort mode, it does a pretty good job of soaking up the bumps. It's a Mercedes-Benz, so it still has that Mercedes-Benz type of feel to it. Of course, all well being cocooned and luxury. I mean, it really is planted. You feel very confident in this thing as well. There's a little sweet spot there. If about 4,000 RPM, if you downshift, it'll make popcorn.
I love the high window seals. The fact that you're sitting sort of on the rear tires almost, at least towards the rear axle of the car, gets a very cool, like industrial tank kind of feel to it. It's hard to explain, but it's a cool view out with that long front bonnet. Yeah. I could just do that all day.
It's just every time. And it's still the Mercedes-Benz, you can make all that noise, all that chaos, then you come back, slap it in comfort, automatic mode, and it gets much quieter. It's got a banging sound system, Burmester Sound System.
I mean, visibility is quite good. Pretty large sized trunk as well. Good storage in the back. I mean, it's just a great daily driver. I mean, if you wanted a car like this as a daily, you could do it. I mean, easily.
